Two-day Kisan Mela-2026 begins at Haflong to Empower Hill Farmers

Agriculture department highlights scientific farming, animal husbandry and rural infrastructure

HAFLONG, Feb 10: The Department of Agriculture in collaboration with various allied sectors under the CSS-ATMA, on Monday kicked off a two-day Kisan Mela-2026 at Krishi Bhawan, Haflong in Dima Hasao district.

Scheduled to be held from February 10 to February 11, 2026, the event aims to empower local farmers by showcasing modern agricultural techniques and fostering regional agricultural growth. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Sameer Roy, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture, who attended as the chief guest.

Among others present at the programme were Laisringdi Naiding, ACS, Deputy Secretary of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC); Dhritiraj Alamyan, ACS, Assistant Commissioner; Dr Bhairab Kakati, in-charge Additional Director (Hills) of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department; the Fishery Development Officer; KVK scientist and the Assistant General Manager of NABARD.

Addressing the gathering, Chairman Roy emphasised the importance of integrating modern technology with traditional farming practices to enhance productivity across the district. He said the Kisan Mela features multiple stalls and interactive sessions aimed at providing farmers direct access to expert guidance and departmental resources.

Speaking to farmers, Dr Kakati stressed the need to shift from traditional to scientific methods of animal rearing, particularly in local poultry and piggery sectors. He assured that the department would facilitate training programmes to help farmers improve productivity.

Highlighting developments in rural infrastructure, Dr Kakati also announced that several NABARD-funded projects under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) are underway to reconstruct veterinary dispensaries across Dima Hasao, with the objective of improving animal health services.

The programme also included interactive sessions between farmers and departmental resource persons, offering a platform to discuss challenges related to plantation, cattle rearing, livestock management and the implementation of various agricultural schemes.

The initiative forms part of a series of agricultural programmes in the region and reflects the continued commitment of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC) towards rural development, livelihood enhancement and food security. Farmers and other officials were also present at the event.
