Minor Assault Bid Foiled in Moran; Accused Arrested After Locals Intervene

GUWAHATI, Feb 19: A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Moran, under Dibrugarh district, for allegedly attempting to assault a 13-year-old girl inside her residence.

The accused, identified as Deepak Pandav, reportedly entered the house in the Bamunbari area on the pretext of asking for water. According to local sources, he allegedly exploited the situation when the minor was alone at home.

The alleged attempt was thwarted when the girl’s mother returned unexpectedly and caught the suspect in the act. Her screams alerted neighbours, who rushed to the spot and prevented the accused from fleeing. Enraged locals reportedly assaulted the man before handing him over to the Bamunbari police outpost.

Following the incident, the victim’s family lodged a formal FIR. Police confirmed that the accused has been taken into custody and is currently being interrogated.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage in the area, with residents demanding swift investigation and strict action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Authorities have stated that further legal proceedings are underway.
