DEMOW, Jan 8: A tragic incident occurred at Kharahat Bor Deroi Gaon near Demow on Tuesday night, where one person was killed in police firing during an operation to control a violent situation. The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Pandav, a resident of the same village.
According to information received, Ranjit Pandav was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and was shouting and creating panic in the locality late on Tuesday night. His neighbours, Motin Pandav and Gita Pandav, approached him and requested that he stop shouting. However, Ranjit Pandav allegedly became violent and attacked Motin Pandav on the neck and his wife Gita Pandav on her leg with a dao, leaving both of them seriously injured.
Local residents immediately rushed the injured couple to Demow Model Hospital cum CHC at Konwar Dehingia Raichai. The local Village Defence Party (VDP) informed the Demow Police about the incident, following which a police team rushed to the spot.
Sources said that Ranjit Pandav was highly intoxicated, aggressive and armed with a dao and remained out of control despite repeated attempts by the police to pacify and disarm him. During the operation, Ranjit Pandav allegedly charged towards the police personnel with the dao. In response, Rupam Barpatra of the Third APBn fired two warning shots. Even after the warning shots, Ranjit Pandav reportedly continued his aggressive behaviour, forcing the police to fire one round in self-defence. The bullet hit Ranjit Pandav on his leg, after which the situation was brought under control.
Ranjit Pandav was immediately taken to Demow Model Hospital cum CHC on Tuesday night. From there, he, along with the injured Motin Pandav and Gita Pandav, was referred to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, for better treatment. Ranjit Pandav later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in Dibrugarh.
Hiren Kumar Deka, Superintendent of Police of Demow Co-district, informed the media on Wednesday about the entire incident. He stated that Gita Pandav is now out of danger, while her husband Motin Pandav remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment at AMCH, Dibrugarh.
