KOKRAJHAR, Feb 22: A violent clash broke out between two groups over a land-related dispute in Kokrajhar.
Four people were seriously injured in the incident — Matiur Rahman (35), Harmuj Ali Sheikh (45), Jahanur Islam (27) and Abdur Rahman (28).
The violence reportedly erupted over a dispute related to channeling water from a nearby spring or waterfall.
The incident took place this afternoon at Shalbari under Kokrajhar Police Station. The victims have lodged a case at the sadar police station seeking justice.
In the FIR filed by victim Chorab Ali at Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, the accused have been named as: Kamal Sheikh, Saher Ali Sheikh, Bahar Ali Sheikh, Taher Ali Sheikh and Kamand Sheikh.
Police have already detained Saher Ali Sheikh, Taher Ali Sheikh and Kamand Sheikh in connection with the incident.
There are allegations that the Miya community has been harassing indigenous local communities for a long time.
The victims have demanded the immediate arrest and legal punishment of the main accused, Kamal Sheikh.
Victims and locals also staged a protest at Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station demanding justice.
They further demanded strict action against those responsible for atrocities against indigenous people and appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene.
The victims also expressed anger at the police for allegedly delaying the registration of the cases.
