SIVASAGAR, May 2: Sati Radhika Memorial Day was observed with a day-long programme at Radhika Udyan, Thanamukh here on Saturday.
District Development Commissioner Pabitra Kumar Das, speaking as the chief guest at the function, said there is a need to include the story of Sati Radhika in school textbooks so that the younger generation can learn about her contribution to Assamese society. He added that the present government has been significantly aiding SC communities through various schemes, but many people are still deprived.
The function, organised by the Dr BR Ambedkar Foundation Assam, was presided over by Pranjal Das. In his speech, he said that SC communities living in 39 villages in the Sivasagar constituency have been contributing substantially in various fields, but this fact is not recognised by political parties.
The event was attended by journalist Sumesh Deka, Officer-in-Charge of Sivasagar Police Station Babul Kumar Medhi, Ward Member Banti Das and several other dignitaries. The meeting felicitated Dr Binapani Hazarika, Chakra Sanghathak Aben Chandra Das, journalists Himanshu Neog, Ratu Kumar Das, Munna Agarwal, Pranjal Puja and Moni Gogoi, retired teacher Hemchandra Das and social workers Balin Das, Prabin Das and Sunil Singh.
In the evening, a lantern-lighting ceremony was held at the statue of Sati Radhika. The meeting was attended by Hemen Das, Paresh Das, Upen Das, Subhadra Hazarika, Kusheshwari Das, Kalpana Hazarika, Diganta Das, Seemanta Hazarika, Bidyut Das, Bhaskar Kumar Das, Fatik Hazarika, Jayant Das and Manik Das.
