22nd Rongjali Baisagu festival begins at Garjaga village

HOWRAGHAT, May 9: The 22nd Rongjali Baisagu festival began on Saturday with a two-day colourful programme at Garjaga village under the Howraghat Legislative Assembly Constituency in Karbi Anglong.

The festival is being organised jointly by several regional Bodo organisations, including All Bodo Students Union, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, ABWWF, Kachari Samaj, the Gaonburha Association, Dularai Bodo Harimu Afad, Ex-BLT Welfare Council and Ex-NDFB.

The programme began with the inauguration of the main entrance gate by former Howraghat Tiniali Regional ABSU secretary Golap Baglari.

This was followed by the hoisting of the festival flag by reception committee president Dinesh Narzary.

Floral tributes to martyrs were offered under the leadership of Maheswar Basumatary.

The celebration witnessed participation from hundreds of residents of nearby villages including Gorkhia Pukhuri, Dakshin Dighalipar, Kachu Pukhuri, Mirdupathar, Chunpora, Majgaon, Kunjok Pathar and Garjaga.

Various traditional sports and competitions were organised during the day, including kabaddi, volleyball, tug-of-war and athletics events.

The evening session featured cultural performances and competitions such as Baisagu dance, Demchi dance and modern Bodo dance performances, drawing enthusiastic participation from local artistes and youth groups. Organisers said the celebrations would continue on Sunday with more cultural and community programmes as part of the two-day festival.
