Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev University Marks 13th Foundation Day

NAGAON, June 10: Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev University, Nagaon observed its 13th Foundation Day with a day-long programme at the university auditorium on Tuesday.

The celebrations began with flag hoisting in the morning by Bhabendra Nath Deka, Chancellor of the university and Padadhikar of Srimanta Sankardev Sangha.

The open session commenced with lamp lighting and the university anthem. Welcoming the gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof Ashok Kumar Bora presented the university’s progress report and thanked Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for the state government’s support.

Chancellor Bhabendra Nath Deka spoke on the background of the university’s establishment and stressed the need to present Srimanta Sankardev to society through a scientific perspective. He also unveiled the university’s annual magazine ‘Saraswat’ and the Assamese Department’s annual journal ‘Dapun’.

Local MLA Rupak Sarma attended the event as Guest of Honour.

Dr Pankaj Bora, Assistant Professor at Tezpur University, attended the programme as chief guest. Highlighting the relevance of Srimanta Sankardev’s philosophy in modern education, he said that data and information together generate knowledge and when knowledge is processed it moves towards technology. He added that while artificial intelligence can provide technology, it cannot possess wisdom, which is essential for human progress. He also observed that Sankardev had introduced educational methods in the 15th–16th century that align closely with modern concepts of participatory and interactive learning.

Noted litterateur, journalist and Professor of Practice Anuradha Sarma Pujari recalled childhood memories and said moral consciousness in society could be strengthened only if Sankardev’s ideals are firmly instilled in the younger generation.

Professor of Practice and architect Nuruddin Ahmed reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the university’s development and briefed the gathering on his involvement with the Bordowa project.

Coordinator Kushal Thakuria said society can progress only with a service-oriented mindset and appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders associated with the university. Registrar Dr Sarat Hazarika delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was conducted by Dr Triveni Saikia, Head of the Education Department and Dr Ajit Devnath, Head of the Economics Department.
