IMPHAL, Oct 20: Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) on Wednesday demanded a thorough verification of the non-local workers brought by construction companies executing various developmental projects in Manipur.
The demand came at a time when police have been conducting drives against illegal migrants and violators of Inner Line Permit System and after seven non-local workers of a company executing a project in Imphal were found possessing no ILP pass.
Addressing media at its office in Imphal on Wednesday, JCILPS convenor Phulindro Konsam informed that seven non-local workers of a private company executing a developmental project in Imphal were found to have possessed no ILP pass during a drive by members of the committee.
He alleged that various private companies executing developmental projects in the state engaged non-local workers and demanded that the police drive should also include the non-local workers being engaged in the developmental projects.
Phulindro then lauded the state government for the intensive drives being conducted to detect illegal migrants and ILP violators and said that JCILPS will extend all possible co-operations to the police drives.
He, however, said that the JCILPS was confused whether the drive is for only sometime.
He demanded to conduct the drive under a policy and cover all places where non-Manipuris stay including workplaces of the companies engaging in developmental project works.
He said that JCILPS would like the drive to cover workplaces of the private sectors and companies as well as rented houses across the state.
The state government should also instruct these private sectors, companies and owners of the rented house not to allow non-locals with no ILP pass to work or stay, Phulindro stated.
Meanwhile, the JCILPS convenor reiterated that they will not accept 1961 as the base year for identification of non-Manipuris and insisted that the base year should be 1951.
Phulindro then said that the JCILPS will continue to stage democratic protests to enact NRC in Manipur, establish a State population commission and make the ILPS more effective. (NNN)
