Shillong, Nov 3 (NNN): The United Democratic Party (UDP) has suggested the Government of Meghalaya to implement a system adopted by Mizoram to address the ever-growing traffic jams in Shillong.
In a letter to chief minister Conrad K Sangma, UDP Shillong City general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said, “It is my humble suggestion that if we implement a system, currently being operational in the capital of Mizoram, Aizawl, this problem that we are facing can be suitably addressed.”
For example, he said, on Mondays, only private vehicles with numbers ending in 0 and 1, Tuesdays 2 and 3, Wednesday 4 and 5, Thursdays 6 and 7 and open to all on weekends.
“However, augmentation of public transportation services to cater to the demand that will arise thereof should be first addressed before implementation of the said system. Strict enforcement of the said system would also be warranted,” Dkhar said.
According to him, the ever-growing traffic jams across Shillong are turning out to be a major hurdle for all of the city dwellers.
“A lot of our time stands wasted while commuting from our homes to our workplaces and vice versa,” he added.
