GUWAHATI, April 19: A regional dissemination workshop of the National Family Health Survey – 5 (NFHS-5) was held at the Assam Administrative Staff College on Tuesday. The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India (MoHFW) & International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS). The dignitaries present for the launch of the workshop were Sandhya Krishnamurthy, director general (Statistics), MoHFW, Harsh Mangla, IAS, director (NHM), MoHFW, P Manoj Kumar, chief director (Statistics), MoHFW, Dr. Lakshmanan S, IAS, mission director, NHM, Assam, Dr. Sumita Ghosh, additional commissioner, MoHFW, prof H. Lhungdim, (IIPS), prof Laxmi Kant Dwivedi, (IIPS) and Dr. Sarang Pedgaonkar, (IIPS).

The workshop was also participated by representatives from North Eastern states, representatives from all Directorates of Health & Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Assam and NHM State HQ, joint director of Health Services and district programme manager of all districts.
The major improvement of Assam in National Family Health Survey (NFHS -5) include – Under 5 Mortality Rate (U5MR) (i.e. child death of age 0-5 years) of the state was 56.5 per 1,000 live birth as per NFHS-4 (2015-16) which was very high compared to 49.7 of the national average. But, NFHS-5 (2019-20) showed the improvement made by the State. As per NFHS-5 (2019-20), Under 5 Mortality of the state is 39.1 compared to 41.9 of the national average.
That means, the child mortality rate of the state is below the national average for the first time in Assam.
Similarly, Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) (i.e. infant death of age 0-1 year) of the state was 47.6 per 1,000 live births as per NFHS-4 (2015-16) which was very high compared to 40.7 of the national average. But, as per NFHS-5 (2019-20), Infant Mortality of the state has come down to 31.9 compared to 35.2 of the national average. That means, the infant mortality rate of the state is also below the national average for the first time in Assam.
Similarly, huge improvement is also witnessed in Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR) (i.e. infant death of age 0 – 28 days). The NMR of the state has come down from 32.8 in NFHS – 4 (2015-16) to 22.5 in NFHS-5 (2019-20). Now, the NMR of the state is also below the national average of 24.9 (NFHS-5).
Institutional Birth (%) in the state has increased from 70.6% (NFHS-4) to 84.1% (NFHS-5). It was only 22.4% as per NFHS-3 (2005-06).
Institutional Birth in Public Facility (%) has also increased from 60.0% (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 74.4% (NFHS-5, 2019-20). As per NFHS-5, Assam’s performance is better than the national average which is 61.9%. That means more mothers of the state prefer public health facilities for delivery than the national average.
