TEZPUR, March 13: Assam College Principals’ Council stood against University Grant Commission’s (UGC) move to shift its Guwahati based regional office to Delhi and appeals for rollback of UGC-NERO Guwahati office shifting to New Delhi.

Assam College Principals’ Council (ACPC) urged the state government to take strong action to resist the stand taken by UGC.
In a memorandum submitted in this connection to the Chief Minister of Assam ACPC president Saumar Jyoti Mahanta and general secretary Ranjan Kalita mentioned decision to relocate the UGC regional office of Guwahati to New Delhi will mar the ongoing activities and will create immense problem to decentralise works pertaining to Higher Education Institutions (HEI).
To cover a greater area in the northeast region (NER), the UGC established the NERO at Guwahati, and it has been serving the entire NE region including Assam continually and we are highly benefited from this regional office functioning at our state capital, a release added.
On behalf of the ACPC duo expressed great concern over the the letter issued by UGC secretary, Rajesh Kumar Verma to all the principals of the colleges in Northeast region stating the move to shifting of the regional office to Delhi and in future every official works of North eastern colleges will be done in Delhi.
It was further mentioned in the memorandum that this decision of UGC would create serious problems in smooth functioning of higher educational institutes of Assam and NE states. At this changing scenario, when NEP 2020 is going to be implemented from this year and UGC has been restructuring its various wings like HECI, NHERC, GEC, HEGC, NAC, it is necessary to rethink this decision.
Once the UGC regional office is transferred from Guwahati it would be difficult to bring the new offices back as per requirements of NEP 2020, they mentioned.
The ACPC also vehemently condemned the incident of physical assault of principal of Barbhag College in Nalbari Dr. Birinchi Kumar Choudhury following a minor accident case on March 9 while he was on the way to his college. The college principal’s body also demanded strong action against the persons involved in the incident.
