JORHAT, March 16: A three-day long skill development training on bamboo shoot processing and value addition was organised at the Observation Home, Lichubari here, for the inmates by the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Sotai, here in association with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jorhat, from March 13 to 15.
An RFRI official informed that 25 inmates attended the training programme, sponsored by Bamboo Technical Support Group (BTSG) of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), which in turn was funded by National Bamboo Mission (NBM), of the central government.
Vijay Kumar Singh, chief judicial magistrate, Jorhat, inaugurated the programme in presence of Dr Rajib Kumar Borah, Director, RFRI, Devojyoti Bhuyan, secretary, DLSA, Jorhat, RK Kalita, head, extension division, RFRI.
In the inaugural session the CJM urged the participants to make use of local bamboo resources in better ways so that they could earn their livelihood from it, while Dr Borah highlighted various applications of bamboo in the inaugural session. In the first technical session, RK Kalita delivered a presentation on ‘Bamboo: A wonder plant with multifarious utilisations’.
The trainees participated in various hands-on sessions and prepared eight different value-added products of bamboo shoot. Besides, the trainees were also taught about the processing of raw bamboo shoots and its preservation process.
Pranjal Kumar Goswami, an entrepreneur from Guwahati, was the resource person for the training programme. Certificates were distributed to the participants at the valedictory session held on the concluding day.
