People Apprised Of Original Manipuri Script

HOJAI, April 17: “Undoubtedly Manipuri language original and ethnic script is Meetei Yelhow Mayek(script) with 36 alphabets and not the Konung Mayek which is of 27 alphabets”, said S Samarjeet Singha, secretary, Aman Taranithoi, Apokpa Marup, Hounasang Hojai District Branch, while addressing reporters at Mainapathar area in Matikhola in Hojai on Sunday evening.

He said, “We request Assam government not to include 27 alphabets Konung Mayek manipuri script in the educational institute of Assam until the case between the two facets (i.e Konung Mayek script supporter and Meetei Yelhow  Mayek supporter) is undergoing.

He said that controversy is still lingering between 27 alphabets Konung Mayek script and 36 alphabets Meetei Yelhow Mayek, but we want to convey the message to entire Manipuri community in Assam and in the world that 36 alphabets Meetei Yelhow Mayek is the only original and ethnic script of Manipuri language.

He further said, “We condemn the scheduled meeting on April 19 between educational department and Manipuri Language Protection Co-Ordination Commiittee (unregistered organisation) on

27 alphabets Konung Mayek (script).”

He said regarding this controversy already the organisation had forwarded memorandum to president of India; secratary, department of economic affairs and many other competent authority and still process is undergoing.

“Some religious or some desirous people willingly with the help of government have included this controversial 27 alphabets konung Mayek in the education system spreading that 27 alphabets konung Mayek script is the original script of Manipuri language but this information is at bay from actual truth”, said Y Tandan Singha, assistant general secretary, Aman Taranithoi, Apokpa Marup, Hounasang, Hojai Branch. He said due to the 27 alphabets Konung script we cannot read our holy scripture error free, as Manipuri language is one of the toughest language. He said in each Manipuri family the holy Manipuri scriptures placed in their prayer place is of 36 alphabets Meetei Yelhow Mayek(script), and this script is not manipulated, it is prevalent from time immemorial. He said our struggle on this issue will continue till 36 alphabets Meetei Yelhow Mayek(script) is not recognised as the original script of Manipuri language.
