DIPHU, March 20: A ten-day training-cum-workshop on Karbi folk dance and song for the Karbis of Ri-bhoi district of Meghalaya concluded here on Saturday and certificates were distributed to the trainees.
The training was conducted by Diphu Cultural Centre of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) in collaboration with Karbi Cultural Society (KCS), Meghalaya Zone. The training-cum-workshop on Karbi folk dance and song started on March 9 with 47 trainees. Karbi folk dances- Ritnong Chingdi-cultivating dance, Hacha Kekan-harvesting dance and Nimso Kerung and folk lullaby Oso Kepadok, Tu-ah-e and Jili Alun were taught to trainees by instructors Pratap Engleng, Kangbura Tokbi and Rengsika Katharpi.
Deputy director, Art & Culture Department, Rani Terangpi said, “To promote tribal folk and traditions, the Art & Culture Department of State sector organises such training workshops. The department has organised training workshop on Karbi folk dance and songs for the Karbis of Ri-bhoi district of Meghalaya at Purduwa.”
She further said, “The Karbis are rich in culture, language and tradition which is distinct from other tribes. The Karbis living in Ri-bhoi district of Meghalaya should promote the practice of their culture and language.”
President of KCS, Chandrasing Kro said, “Due to closeness with other people there may be borrowing of words from other tribes, but one’s practice should be preserved. The purpose of KCS is to maintain a relationship among the Karbis living in different parts of Assam and Northeast and unite them.”
He announced that there will be quarters allotted to the cultural troupes of Karbis from Ri-bhoi district in Meghalaya, Dumra, Sonitpur and Cachar at Taralangso, Karbi People’s Hall in the next Karbi Youth Festival.”
Taralangso, is the seat of KCS and the venue of Karbi Youth Festival in Diphu, Karbi Anglong which is held annually.
He praised the youths who underwent the training.
Later, certificates were distributed among the trainees.
Tribal Culture Research officer Dilip Kathar; traditional King, Raid Hoppati Mylliem Syiemship, RR Klein, president of All Meghalaya Karbi Association, RR Ronghang, president of KCS, Meghalaya Zone, Albinus Timung and secretary, Superlin Ronghang also attended the programme.
