SIVASAGAR, May 9: A meeting was held in Desangmukh, on Sunday, to harness public support for establishing the first-degree college in the greater Desangmukh area which comprises over twenty villages.
Presided over by Dembiam Panging, the president of the committee to go ahead with the resolution, the meeting was addressed by several leaders of various organisations.
Umananda Mili, the secretary, spoke on the objectives while Firoj Khan, working president, delivered the welcome address. Samiran Phukan, assistant secretary, AASU central committee in his speech said that people everywhere are running after some dreams and the people of Desangmukh have their own to fulfill and the degree college is one of the ways to reach the destination. Basanta Gogoi, vice president, ATASU, said that the demand for a degree college is the need of the hour for the vast area and its students aspiring for higher education. Chitu Baruah, president, Jatiya Sangrami Sena, Asom, said that the move to establish a degree college is a good sign of true progress in the society at a time it is fragmented by intolerance and religious polarisation. Farid Islam Hazarika, secretary Aikya Sena, said that the people’s project on education will surely be materialised with small contributions from everybody. Pankaj Khound, Sangrami Sena Asom, Manabendra Doley, secretary, TMPK, Sivasagar district committee, Mridula Das, secretary, SC Students’ Union, Biren Sing Mili of Tribal Sangha, Nityananda Panging of Takam Mising Durb Kebang, Niva Pegu Mili, member, Mising Autonomous Council, and a number of others in their speech supported the idea of opening a degree college in Desangmukh.
