GUWAHATI, May 9 (PTI): The Opposition CPI(M), on Tuesday, alleged that the BJP-led Assam government’s promise of providing one lakh jobs in one year has been a sham with only about 70,000-75,000 candidates actually benefiting from it in over two years.
Addressing a press conference here, Manoranjan Taluqdar, the sole CPI(M) MLA in the 126-member Assam Assembly, wondered how providing jobs to only one lakh youth would help in solving the unemployment problem of the state.
“Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had promised one lakh government jobs whereas there are 22 lakh registered unemployed youths in the state,” Taluqdar said.

“Even if we give him a little leeway, the number of jobs being given is around 91,000.
Among these, numerous candidates have qualified for more than one post. We feel that in reality only about 70,000-75,000 posts will be filled,” Taluqdar maintained.
He also asked why the government had not made a provision for publishing the list of candidates with their marks.
He maintained that the state government’s argument that the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act prevents the publication of waiting lists is an “eyewash” as judicial bodies have been using the provision of waitlisting candidates.
“If candidates who have already appeared for the exams are selected via a waiting list, it will reduce the burden on the candidates as well as the government.”
“Also, publishing the marks of all candidates will ensure transparency of the process,” Taluqdar added.
