TEZPUR, May 13: Noted Sanskrit Scholar of the state, retired HoD of Department of Sanskrit, Darrang College, Upendra Nath Sarmah passed away this morning at around 8.40 am at Guwahati in a private hospital. A frontline personality of the socio-cultural life of historic Tezpur city, late Sarmah was suffering from acute health issues for the last few days. As his health condition worsened he was admitted to hospital a few days back. However, he breathed his last on Saturday in the hospital at the age of 76 years old.

Born at Gomarimuri village in Nalbari District in 1947 late Sarmah after passing his matriculation from Kaithalkuchi High School in 1965 he did his Pre-University course in Science stream from Cotton College and later cleared his degree course in Sanskrit from Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati in 1968. In the same year he joined the Telecommunication department under the government of India.
In between amidst many challenges he managed to take the masters’ degree in Sanskrit from Guwahati University in 1972. After clearing his masters in Sanskrit, he started a new journey of career joining as a teacher in Diphu D A U School. Later he served in Digboi College, Dibrugarh Hanuman Bax Surajmal Kanoi College and finally he joined in the Sanskrit Department in Darrang College here in 1972. He retired as HoD of the department in 2007. A vocal personality for all fronts including social and academic fields, late Upendra Nath Sarmah was a popular figure among the students for his amiable nature and selfless involvement in every issue of the students who always tried to shoulder his special responsibility in aspects. He was connected with several social and educational organisations. He was the president of Darrang College Governing body, executive member of GB of Rangapara College, Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Girls’ College in Tezpur Mission Chariali, Baan Theatre, Tezpur Sahitya sabha, Tarun Asam Sangha, Asamiya Club, Kamrupia Sanatan Dharma Mandali etc.
Honoured with several awards and honours conferred by several state, national and local and different academic institutions the noted Sanskrit scholar played the role of an unmatched pathfinder in the socio-cultural field of the region. It is to be mentioned here that till the last moment of his life he served as principal in the Inspire Academy here. He wrote several articles on different issues a compilation of which titled ‘Kisuman Bhal loga kothar keitaman khudra Nibandha rup” was recently released in a function by Dr. Jadunath Bargohain. He leaves behind his wife Dipali Devi, two sons namely, Nilakantha Sarmah and Chandra Kamal Sarmah. Before performing his last rite, different organisations and individuals including Darrang College fraternity, Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Kamrupiya Sanatan Dharma Mandali, Inspire Academy family among others paid their last tribute to the departed soul.
