TAWANG, Aug 24: The 8th Dorjee Khandu Memorial District-Level Badminton Tournament concluded here recently with vibrant participation, emotional tributes, and renewed commitment towards nurturing sports in the district.
According to an official statement, the three-day sporting event, revived after a gap of three years, was held at the auditorium near Higher Secondary School, Tawang.
A total of 111 matches were played across 21 categories, featuring players from sports clubs representing the three constituencies of the district — Tawang, Jang, and Lungla.
The tournament, named in honour of former chief minister Late Dorjee Khandu, was sponsored this year by MLA Tawang Namgey Tsering, who also attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest.
He was joined by Addl Deputy Commissioner Jang Hakraso Kri, DoKAA Director Thupten Kalden, Shartso Committee Chairman & Tawang LAMPS Dorjee Norbu, District BJP President Lhundup Choisang, as well as public leaders, officers, and sports enthusiasts.
In his address, MLA Namgey Tsering recalled initiating the tournament in 2014 when he served as Chairman of the Tawang Badminton Association.
He paid tribute to the late leader, crediting him for boosting sports infrastructure and inspiration across Arunachal Pradesh.
The MLA also remembered Late Jambey Tashi, Lungla MLA, for motivating youth of the region to compete at national levels.
Highlighting future plans, Tsering announced that a new badminton coach would soon be engaged in Tawang to help train and mentor aspiring players.
He thanked the teams, especially from Jang and Lungla, for their spirited participation and for upholding the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
On behalf of the players, Dr Thupten Tashi of Jang Sports Club and Penjor of Lungla Sports Club conveyed appreciation for the warm hospitality and smooth organisation of the tournament.
Organising Secretary Pema Chowang also extended thanks to all participants and volunteers for their cooperation in ensuring the success of the event.
A symbolic handing-over ceremony marked the conclusion, with the Tawang District Badminton Association led by President Dr Rinchin Neema and Secretary Nawang Thutan formally passing the responsibility of hosting the 9th edition of the tournament to Jang Sports Club, represented by its Secretary Pasang Khandu.
Adding to the excitement of the closing day, an exhibition match was played where MLA Namgey Tsering teamed up with Sangey Wangchu of Monyul Sports Club to defeat Dr Rinchin Neema and Nawang Thutan of Tawang Badminton Association in two straight sets.
In the finals, Lungla Sports Club emerged as the dominant force.
They clinched the Men’s Doubles Open title by defeating Monyul Sports Club Tawang with a convincing scoreline of 21–9.
In the Women’s Doubles Open final, Lungla again prevailed over Monyul, securing a 21–16 win and lifting the trophy.
The event concluded amid loud cheers, mutual appreciation, and a collective pledge to further strengthen badminton in Tawang.
Organisers expressed confidence that the tournament would continue to serve as a platform for young talent to shine and for communities to unite in the spirit of sports.
