NAMSAI, Aug 16: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across Arunachal Pradesh with patriotic fervour, vibrant cultural displays and a collective resolve to uphold the ideals of unity and nation-building.
From Raj Bhavan in Itanagar to the remote heights of Tawang and the disciplined parade grounds of Rayang Military Station, the Tricolour unfurled proudly in an atmosphere charged with national pride and remembrance of the sacrifices that won India her freedom.
According to official statements, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Lt General KT Parnaik (Retd), unfurled the National Flag at Raj Bhavan, Itanagar, and took the salute at the Guard of Honour presented by the Echo Company of the 33rd Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police attached to Raj Bhavan.
Extending heartfelt greetings to the people of the state, the Governor described Independence Day as a solemn reminder of the supreme sacrifices made by countless sons and daughters of India.
He paid rich tributes to freedom fighters, including Matmur Jamoh, Moje Riba and Moji Riba, while emphasising that their legacy continues to inspire generations to uphold justice, equality and unity.
The Governor called upon the people to embrace the vision of Viksit Bharat, stressing that true patriotism lies not only in celebration but in responsible action towards a self-reliant and prosperous India. He appealed to citizens to imbibe the spirit of “Nation First” in their daily lives and pledged support to initiatives promoting cleanliness and dignity for all.
Staff members of Raj Bhavan who excelled in the ‘Swachh Ghar’ competition were felicitated, with prizes awarded to Phurpa Zomba, Ranjumoni Borah and Monju Damin.
Adding to the spirit of festivity, the Governor, along with the First Lady Anagha Parnaik, distributed sweets to schoolchildren and officials, reinforcing the message of fraternity and unity.
In the evening, the Governor and the First Lady attended the ‘At Home’ reception hosted by chief minister Pema Khandu at his official residence in Niti Vihar, Itanagar.
The reception, attended by former Chief Ministers, senior leaders, officials, corporators, cultural performers and people from different walks of life, provided a platform for camaraderie and collective celebration.
Traditional performances by local artists showcasing Arunachal Pradesh’s rich heritage added colour to the occasion, drawing enthusiastic applause and highlighting the fusion of cultural pride with patriotic spirit.
At Rayang Military Station, the Armed Forces marked Independence Day with military precision and solemnity. Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers, jawans, civilian staff and their families came together for a flag hoisting ceremony at first light.
The unfurling of the National Flag, bathed in the golden rays of the morning sun, was accompanied by the National Anthem, echoing across the parade ground as a symbol of resilience and sacrifice.
The ceremony reflected the ethos of the Armed Forces—unity, discipline and devotion to the nation—culminating in informal interactions between troops and their families that underscored the strong bonds within the military community.
In Tawang, the General Parade Ground witnessed one of the largest Independence Day gatherings in the state. Local MLA Namgey Tsering unfurled the National Flag in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, Superintendent of Police Dr DW Thongon, monastic leaders, public representatives, women’s organisations, Army officers, SSB and ITBP personnel, as well as contingents from schools and youth organisations.
The march past by contingents of the Army, Police, Scouts, Guides and schoolchildren received resounding applause, reflecting the spirit of discipline and patriotism.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Tsering paid tributes to freedom fighters and remembered the sacrifices of unsung heroes of the 1962 Indo-China War.
He also recalled the contributions of past leaders towards the development of Tawang, before outlining his current developmental initiatives.
The MLA called on unemployed youth to skill themselves and actively participate in nation-building, while also commending institutions such as Dorjee Khandu Government College and the district police for their efforts in education and law enforcement.
He further felicitated successful candidates of the APPSCCE Mains Examination from his constituency with a cash prize of ₹1.5 lakh each from his personal resources, aiming to inspire academic excellence.
The day also witnessed the final match of the Merag Lama Lodroe Gyatso Independence Day Cup at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium, where Monyul FC defeated the All Monpa Students’ Union Football Team 3–1 in front of an enthusiastic crowd, adding to the festive spirit.
Similar celebrations were held in Lungla and Jang Sub-Divisions, where local leaders unfurled the Tricolour and addressed gatherings of officials and citizens.
Across Arunachal Pradesh, from the Governor’s residence to district headquarters, military stations and village grounds, the 79th Independence Day celebrations stood as a testimony to the state’s vibrant unity, rich cultural traditions and unwavering pride in the nation’s journey.
The diverse range of programmes—from solemn flag hoistings and guard of honour ceremonies to cultural showcases, community gatherings and sporting events—reflected not only the patriotic zeal of the people but also their collective aspirations for peace, progress and prosperity.
