TAWANG, Sept 25: The tourism sector in Tawang received a major boost on Thursday with the launch of a comprehensive “Refresher cum Capacity Building Training Programme” for local tourism stakeholders.
The initiative, envisioned by Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, IAS, was organised by the Department of Tourism, Tawang, with the objective of equipping stakeholders with the skills and awareness required to meet the growing demands of the sector.
Addressing the inaugural session, DC Namgyal Angmo underlined that the conduct, behavior and professional approach of stakeholders are central to shaping a visitor’s impression of Tawang.
She said tourism must go hand in hand with responsibility, reflecting not only economic opportunity but also a strong commitment to preserving the district’s fragile environment, vibrant culture, traditions and heritage.
Stressing a shift in focus from the volume of tourists to the quality of services provided, she remarked, “Tourism is the backbone of our economy. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every visitor enjoys a safe, clean and memorable experience, while we safeguard our pristine environment and unique cultural identity.”
She further noted that capacity-building initiatives such as the one launched on Thursday will empower local participants to deliver visitor-friendly and sustainable services, ultimately boosting Tawang’s profile as a premier tourist destination.
District Tourism Officer (DTO) Tsering Dekey, while extending his gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner, described the programme as a visionary and timely intervention.
He urged all participants to apply the training in their professional roles to improve service delivery across the tourism sector.
The training covered a wide range of practical and critical areas. Medical experts from KDS District Hospital, led by Dr Tenzin Kunga, MS, conducted sessions on first aid and basic emergency response, equipping stakeholders with skills essential for handling medical situations involving visitors.
The Fire Services Department provided detailed training on fire safety protocols and evacuation drills, while the Police Department, represented by Officer-in-Charge of Tawang Police Station Niyi Angu, held sessions on traffic management and parking discipline, key concerns during peak tourist seasons.
Environmental sustainability formed another core component of the programme.
The Department of Forest conducted an awareness session on biodiversity, ecosystem protection and the need for forest conservation in the face of rising tourist activity.
The Department of Urban Development and Housing supplemented this with practical training on sustainable tourism practices, emphasising effective waste management strategies that align with the government’s vision of eco-friendly development.
The programme concluded with an interactive session that enabled participants to share perspectives and raise issues directly related to their experiences in the field.
Officials and stakeholders alike noted that such dialogues are crucial in developing coordinated solutions to the challenges facing the tourism sector in the district.
The day-long event was widely acknowledged as a landmark effort in strengthening the foundation of Tawang’s tourism industry.
By building the capacity of local service providers and sensitizing them to safety, sustainability and professionalism, the initiative is expected to greatly enhance visitor satisfaction and further consolidate Tawang’s reputation as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the Northeast.
