NAMSAI, June 12: A high-level coordination meeting was convened today in Tawang under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, IAS, to deliberate on key issues surrounding tourism development and the district’s preparedness in curbing drug-related activities.
The meeting brought together representatives from security agencies, district officials, and stakeholders from the tourism industry to address growing concerns and chart a forward-looking approach.
The information was provided in an official statement.
Held in the backdrop of rising tourist footfall in Tawang, the meeting focused primarily on regulating the movement of foreign tourists in sensitive locations.
With the region’s strategic and ecological sensitivity, ensuring proper compliance with national security protocols emerged as the central theme of the discussion.
The meeting was attended by Brigadier Bhupal Singh, Commander of Tawang Brigade, Superintendent of Police Dr D W Thongon, Divisional Forest Officer Piyush Gaikwad, Assistant Commissioner Sangey Wangmu Mosobi, and District Tourism Officer Tsering Deki.
Also present were executive members from the Hoteliers Association, Taxi & Tour Operators Association, Homestay Owners Association, Market Welfare Committee, and intelligence agency representatives.
Tourism stakeholders expressed the need for clearer and more uniform guidelines for foreign tourists, particularly those visiting high-interest areas that are also considered sensitive.
In response, Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo assured the gathering that concerns would be forwarded to higher authorities for necessary policy interventions.
However, she reiterated that national security remains the topmost priority and urged full cooperation from all involved in managing tourism-related activities.
Following the tourism deliberation, the Monthly NCORD (National Committee on Drug Control) Meeting was held, focusing on the district’s anti-narcotics strategy and law enforcement updates.
Superintendent of Police D W Thongon delivered a comprehensive presentation on crime and public safety statistics in the district.
According to the SP, since the arrest of a drug peddler and several consumers last year, Tawang has not reported any new drug-related cases.
He highlighted the intensification of night patrolling operations and the installation of surveillance cameras at critical entry and exit points in and around the town as part of the preventive security framework.
Thongon also called on the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity linked to drug abuse or anti-social behaviour.
He emphasised the significance of public cooperation in curbing the spread of narcotics and maintaining law and order.
Deputy Commissioner Angmo lauded the efforts of law enforcement agencies and encouraged continued proactive coordination between local administration and citizens.
She stressed that ensuring a crime-free and welcoming environment was a shared responsibility that required commitment from all segments of society.
During an interactive session, valuable insights were shared by representatives of the paramilitary forces, intelligence units, and members of the tourism sector.
The discussion emphasised the importance of enhancing coordination between agencies and maintaining a secure atmosphere for both residents and tourists.
As Tawang emerges as a key tourist destination, the district administration underlined its commitment to balancing development with safety and sustainability, ensuring the region continues to thrive while preserving its strategic and cultural integrity.
