PASIGHAT, Sept 18: Pasighat marked Swachhata Hi Seva Diwas on Wednesday with the launch of a comprehensive cleanliness drive under the banner of ‘Denam A:nam Pasighat Abhiyan’ (Swachh Pasighat Abhiyan) at Gandhi Chowk in the town’s main market area.
The campaign was formally inaugurated by Pasighat MLA Tapi Darang, East Siang deputy commissioner Sonalika Jiwani, and chief councillor of Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) Okiam Moyong Borang, in the presence of officials, local organisations, and community members.
The initiative, spearheaded by the PMC in collaboration with the East Siang district administration under the deputy commissioner’s leadership, seeks to transform Pasighat into a Zero Waste Municipal City.
Covering all eight wards under PMC, the campaign aims to achieve a green and clean Pasighat through a mix of citizen participation, sustained awareness programmes, and community responsibility in waste management.
Adding a youthful dimension to the programme, YouTuber, actor, and social media influencer James Libang was roped in as the Swachhata Ambassador for East Siang district under the ‘Denam A:nam Pasighat’ campaign.
His participation was seen as a step towards mobilising young people and amplifying the message of cleanliness through digital platforms.
Addressing the gathering, PMC Municipal Executive Officer Jayanti Pertin highlighted the key features of the campaign.
She said the mission would not only focus on routine cleaning but also emphasise waste segregation at the source, awareness of dry and wet waste management, door-to-door garbage collection, and discouraging public littering.
The programme also saw the flagging off of a Swachhata Vahan, designed to collect and recycle waste, as part of the Smart Waste Challenge implemented by local NGO Green Squad. Participants, including members of NGOs, self-help groups, government departments, traders, and residents, took a Swachhta Pledge reaffirming their commitment to a clean and green Pasighat.
According to officials, the campaign will adopt a holistic approach to waste management by targeting specific areas for cleaning and conversion into green zones, promoting alternatives to single-use plastic, and ensuring active citizen involvement.
“The aim is not only to maintain visible cleanliness but also to inculcate responsible waste practices among the people of Pasighat,” the organisers said. With the combined efforts of civic authorities, the district administration, and community participation, the ‘Denam A:nam Pasighat Abhiyan’ is expected to serve as a model cleanliness campaign in Arunachal Pradesh under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-Urban) framework.
