The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today in the presence of Mayor Tamme Phassang and representatives from ASEZ Itanagar, marking a new chapter in participatory environmental governance in the capital.

The partnership comes at a time when cities across the globe are grappling with challenges such as ecosystem degradation, rising pollution levels, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

The MoU aims to channel the energy and commitment of university students into structured, impactful actions that address these urgent ecological concerns.

Mayor Tamme Phassang, speaking at the signing ceremony, described the agreement as a turning point for environmental awareness in the city.

He praised the enthusiasm of the young volunteers and underlined the role of collective responsibility in building a cleaner and greener Itanagar.

“Young minds brimming with zeal took a remarkable step today. As Mayor, Team IMC officially joined hands with Team ASEZ to promote awareness on cleanliness across our city. This inspiring collaboration stands as a shining example of Jan Bhagidari—where youth lead from the front. Let us all come forward and be part of this movement towards a cleaner, greener future,” he said.

According to the official statement, the MoU envisions a multi-pronged strategy that goes beyond awareness drives.

The focus will include clean-up campaigns, ecosystem restoration efforts, and the practical empowerment of students through field-based responsibilities.

ASEZ’s global Earth Recovery Project will serve as a guiding framework, enabling volunteers in Itanagar to link their efforts to a broader international movement for environmental recovery.

In addition to volunteer activities, the agreement places strong emphasis on collaboration with local stakeholders, academic institutions, and civil society groups. It also includes provisions for joint research initiatives, regular reviews of project outcomes, and mutual consultation to refine strategies.

The goal is to ensure sustained impact and create measurable outcomes that reflect genuine ecological improvement.

With this initiative, Itanagar joins a growing number of cities worldwide that are embracing youth leadership in the environmental sector.

The IMC-ASEZ partnership is expected to catalyse civic participation while providing students with hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and community service.

As climate and ecological challenges intensify, this alliance demonstrates a proactive and hopeful vision of the future—one where young people take centre stage in healing the planet.

The MoU not only reflects the shared commitment of the IMC and ASEZ to sustainable development but also sends a strong message about the power of grassroots collaboration in driving systemic environmental change.
