TAWANG, Aug 8: The preliminary National Space Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Kalawangpo Hall here on Friday, commemorating the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander on the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023.
According to an official statement, the event was part of nationwide observances leading up to the final celebration in New Delhi, marking India’s achievements in space exploration.
Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, IAS, attended the programme as the chief guest and, in her inaugural address, underscored the importance of science and scientific thinking in everyday life.
She urged students to take a deep interest in science, aim high, and aspire to become scientists.
Angmo further stressed that the essence of the celebration should not remain confined to the event but be carried forward into the lives and aspirations of all participants.
The programme featured Jayasimha, project director of Chandrayaan-5, ISRO, Bengaluru, as guest of honour and resource person.
He delivered an engaging lecture on ISRO’s legacy and milestones, supported by an audio-visual presentation that captured the audience’s attention.
Jonali Goswami from the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) also addressed the gathering, focusing on capacity building and outreach initiatives in the space sector.
A quiz competition on space science added a lively dimension to the celebrations, with teams from GHSS Tawang, GSS Town, GSS Bomba, and Manjushree School participating.
GSS Town claimed the top position, while GSS Bomba finished as runner-up.
The event drew officials from the Department of Science and Technology, including its Director and Deputy Directors, along with school principals, teachers, and a large number of students.
The atmosphere was one of learning, curiosity, and inspiration.
Trophies and certificates were presented to the winners of the quiz competition, while all participating students received certificates from the chief guest.
According to the statement, the final celebration of National Space Day will take place in New Delhi, bringing together the outcomes of preliminary events held across the country to honour India’s space achievements.
