The incident occurred on May 4 when the victim, Naseed Ali, who had been driving a truck bearing the registration number ‘AS 01 GC 1779’, rammed his vehicle into the under-construction Ghiladhari bridge on National Highway 15 in Sootea.

Naseed Ali who hailed from Udalguri, died on the spot.

On the other hand, a truck heading from Tezpur towards Biswanath Chariali fell into the Ghiladhari river after it hit the huge railings of the concrete bridge. Due to the slow pace of construction of the four-lane road from Jamugurihat to Gohpur, many road accidents have occurred. Road accidents have become a common occurrence at Jamugurihat, Sootea and Biswanath Chariali area at present.

Locals have alleged that the construction work of the four-lane road ended at the western end of the Ghiladhari river and the commuting vehicles have to cross the river through a single concrete bridge. No distinct road signs have been installed at the both ends of the bridge. As such, a driver has difficulty knowing the point where the road ended.
