HOJAI, Nov 22: After three years of court proceedings, the Court of the District and Sessions Judge, Sankardev Nagar, Hojai, on Friday pronounced its judgment in the sensational case of the brutal attack on on-duty physician Dr Seuj Kr Senapati, Dr Nageswar Choudhury, nurse Lalita Bharali, and UBC Kunja Mohan Nath by an irate mob at Phultoli Model Hospital near Udali in Hojai district on June 1, 2021. The attack had sparked worldwide outrage across all sections of society.
The Court of the District and Sessions Judge on Friday convicted 12 accused persons, namely Kamar Uddin, Hillal Uddin, Gulnehar Begum, Taijur Rahman, Jiabur Rahman, Makbul, Foijur Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Taibur Rahman, Jeshim Uddin alias Papu Borbhuyan, Nazrul Islam, and Mofizur Rahman.
On the other hand, 21 other accused persons were partially implicated by witnesses. Having already spent more than a year in jail, they were acquitted by the Court. The Special Public Prosecutor in the case was Amar Jyoti Saikia.
It is noteworthy that the Lanka police had filed a 639-page chargesheet at the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Sankardev Nagar, Hojai, on June 29, 2021. The chargesheet named 33 accused and 40 witnesses.
Following the incident, FIR No 370/21 was registered at Lanka Police Station. Within 29 days, the Lanka police, under the leadership of superintendent of police Barun Purkayastha and DSP and investigating officer in the case, Rosy Talukdar, filed the chargesheet.
The complaint was filed by Dr Imran Hussain, I/C, Udali Model Hospital.
The incident occurred on June 1, 2021, when an irate mob physically attacked on-duty physician Dr Senapati and three other nursing staff after a Covid-19 patient, Gaisuddin, a resident of No 2 Pipalphukuri, succumbed to the infection. The patient was admitted to the hospital around 11:00 am and passed away at 2:00 pm.
After the judgment, GP Singh, DGP of the government of Assam, posted on X, “In the infamous Doctor Assault case of Udali – Hojai of 2021, the competent court has pronounced 12 accused persons guilty and awarded imprisonment of up to 10 years. Compliments to the entire investigation and prosecution team.”
