Guwahati, May 30: In a major offensive against cybercrime, Morigaon police have intensified their efforts, culminating in a significant crackdown on cybercriminals operating in the region. The recent raid, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Samiran Baishya from the Crime Branch, resulted in the arrest of four individuals involved in fraudulent schemes using Axis Bank credit cards to deceive and rob unsuspecting citizens.

These cybercriminals lured victims into taking loans, exploiting their trust to siphon off funds. The arrested individuals are now in police custody, facing serious charges.

This operation follows a larger, coordinated effort by the Morigaon Police Crime Branch, which detained 14 individuals involved in illegal cyber activities across Assam on May 15. The arrests took place in various locations, including Laharighat, Bhuragaon, Moirabari, and Guwahati, revealing a sophisticated network impacting victims far beyond the state.

The investigation exposed the criminals’ methods of acquiring PAN numbers through a deceptive website, “https://www.mastersindia.co/gst-number-search-by-name-and-pan/”. With these details, they produced fake Aadhar cards at local enrollment centers using counterfeit documents. Chinese editing apps like PAN Creator, available on the Google Play Store, facilitated the creation of forged PAN cards, which were subsequently used to fabricate fake Aadhar cards.

Armed with these forged documents, the cybercriminals opened online bank accounts and strategically applied for loans through various online platforms, including Kiwi, Piramal Housing and Finance, and L&T Finance. They submitted fake documents and mobile numbers to secure loan sanctions from Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). The illicitly obtained funds were then laundered through various accounts using UPI, with portions spent on online shopping and other digital transactions.

The Morigaon police’s decisive action has disrupted a complex cybercrime network, sending a strong message about the region’s commitment to combating digital fraud.
