MARGHERITA, Jan 11: The three-day annual conference and revival programme of the 62-U Upper Assam Sumi Baptist Christian Union (UASBCU), which opened on January 9 at Sumi Baptist Church, Paharpur, concluded successfully on Sunday.
Held from January 9 to 11 at Paharpur under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district, the gathering brought together more than 500 Sumi/Sema worshippers from across Upper Assam and neighbouring areas. Participants included members from six Sema villages—Lalpahar, Paharpur, Saliki, Balijan, Tinkupathar and Longtong—along with members of Adivasi and Gorkha Christian communities from nearby Margherita areas.
Organisers stated that the strong turnout reflected a renewed emphasis on youth engagement, fellowship and collective prayer at a time of social uncertainty.
The opening day began with an invocation by Ino Pitoi Chophy, chairman of UACLF, followed by the inaugural service hosted by the local church. Community representatives led prayers and offerings, while hymns and special songs were presented before the sermon delivered by Rev Kahoto Zhimo, pastor of the host church.
The second day focused on encouragement and fellowship, featuring congregational hymn singing, special musical performances and a sermon. Offerings were led by leaders of affiliated churches, further strengthening inter-church participation and unity.
The programme concluded on Sunday with dedicated prayers for the youth, the villagers of Paharpur and residents of surrounding areas, highlighting the spiritual and social concerns of the community.
Speaking on the occasion, Jogdang Jugli, chairman of Upper Assam Sumi Baptist Christian Union, said the 62-U UASBCU Annual Conference-cum-Revival is held every year in the month of January across six Sema villages in Upper Assam. He added that the venue rotates annually and this year’s host village was selected to broaden participation and strengthen ties among Christian communities within the wider Margherita 83rd Legislative Assembly Constituency area.
