DIPHU, Jan 27: With rest of the country, the 74th Republic Day was celebrated across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong on Thursday by hoisting of the national flag in all government and private institutions and organising Republic Day parades.
In Diphu, the Republic Day celebration was held at Government Boys HS School playground. The tri-colour was hoisted by Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang. He also inspected the Guard of Honour presented by Assam Police, Assam Police battalion and Home Guards.
In his speech, the CEM has highlighted the development undertaken by KAAC. He said, “There is a plan for the construction of Govt. B.Ed. College in Diphu. The Govt. Law College, an auditorium with a sitting capacity of 3000 at Taralangso is under construction. For promoting sports among the youths a multi-purpose auditorium is near completion in Karbi Anglong Sports Association Stadium.”
The CEM further said, “To reach subsidized rice to all Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, KAAC authority has been distributing BPL cards to needy families. KAAC will distribute 1,24,000 BPL cards to families. The BPL families will also get to avail up to Rs. 5 lakh for expenses of any medical treatment through the BPL card.”
Every month the beneficiaries will get an amount of Rs. 1,200 from the government under the ‘Arunodhoi Scheme’, said the CEM.
Ronghang also said, “To reach and know the problems and needs of the people we have been conducting interactive programmes with the villagers. We are organising the interaction programmes to know whether government schemes like Jal Jivan Mission, electricity, education facilities to children and road and communication have reaching them or not.”
The CEM also mentioned that under the MoS 2011 package, a Guest House in New Delhi is under construction. The Guest House will give free accommodation to the students from Karbi Anglong who are pursuing higher studies in New Delhi. Similar guest houses and Karbi Bhawan are also being constructed in Kolkatta, Bangalore and Shillong which will be completed soon.”
A guest house at Nelie, Morigoan and a Karbi hostel at Biswanath Chariali is coming up. A 100 bedded hospital in Bokajan and a residential school at Sarupathar is also coming up, added the CEM.
