DHUBRI, Jan 21: Tension escalated in western Assam on Wednesday as the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) organised a massive sit-in demonstration in front of the District Commissioner’s office. The protesters demanded immediate intervention regarding alleged widespread irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls, which they describe as a “shutdown of government machinery” in protecting legitimate citizens.
The demonstration was marked by high-pitched slogans targeting state leadership, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Dilip Saikia. Protesters raised “Murdabad” slogans, accusing the government of fostering harassment of minority communities under the guise of administrative procedures.
AAMSU leaders alleged that the Special Revision process is being used to manufacture “false allegations” against Indian citizens, questioning their voter status without valid legal grounds. They claimed that legitimate voters are being excluded while field officials and administrative machinery remain indifferent to grievances.
In a strong statement during the protest, Alfaruque Asikur Rahman, general secretary of AAMSU, warned, “If the harassment of genuine Indian citizens does not stop immediately, we will not hesitate to take Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and election officials to the court floor.”
The union also accused certain officials of acting with bias and failing to follow constitutional mandates during the verification process. A memorandum detailing these concerns was submitted to the District Commissioner, urging strict action against administrative officials found violating legal protocols during field verifications.
While the district administration has assured that the Special Revision is being conducted in accordance with Election Commission guidelines, AAMSU has threatened to escalate protests across the state if demands for a fair and transparent process are not addressed.
