KOKRAJHAR, July 14: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam and the Registrar of the Gauhati High Court through the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner, pressing for the inclusion of the Bodo language in key official and recruitment processes.
The student body demanded that the electoral roll for the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections in 2025 be published in Bodo alongside Assamese, citing provisions of the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act, 2020.
ABSU president Dipen Boro emphasised that Bodo, being recognised under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, deserves equal treatment with other official languages in administrative and electoral matters.
The union also raised strong objections to the reported omission of Bodo in the Assam Judicial Service (AJS) Grade-III Mains Examination.
They reiterated their demand for the inclusion of a 50-mark Bodo language paper in the exam and the implementation of a 20-mark Bodo paper in the Junior Administrative Assistant recruitment tests for district courts in Assam, as outlined in a notification by the Gauhati High Court.
Warning of statewide protests, Boro said ABSU would launch an agitation across multiple districts on July 17 if the demands were not met.
He added that the union was prepared to symbolically burn copies of the AJS examination paper in protest against what they view as continued disregard for linguistic rights.
