KOKRAJHAR, Jan 2: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) paid rich tributes to its founder General Secretary Kanakeswar Narzary on his 83rd birth anniversary on Friday, observing the day with a series of programmes in Kokrajhar.
Kanakeswar Narzary, a former Chief Executive Member of the now-defunct Bodoland Autonomous Council is regarded as one of the prominent leaders of the Bodoland statehood movement. A noted social thinker and writer, he hailed from Tengaigaon village near Serfanguri in Kokrajhar district and passed away on October 12, 2003. Popularly known as Khungkra Narzary among the Bodos, he was widely respected for his bold leadership, intellectual depth and creative contributions to social thought.
The birth anniversary of the ABSU founder General Secretary was observed in a befitting manner at Ramfalbil Athiabari in Kokrajhar. As per the programme schedule, ABSU president Dipen Boro hoisted the organisational flag, followed by the offering of floral tributes by Hirabai Narzary, wife of late Kanakeswar Narzary.
Among those present on the occasion were ABSU general secretary Khanindra Basumatary, Kokrajhar District Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Bijuel Kumar Basumatary, local intellectuals and a large number of ABSU members.
Speaking on the occasion, ABSU president Dipen Boro recalled the immense contributions of late Kanakeswar Narzary in shaping the future course of the students’ union. He emphasised the need to build a strong and healthy society free from violence, drugs and other anti-social activities to ensure lasting peace and security in the region.
He said the students’ union and the Bodo community were remembering Narzary as a pioneer leader of his time, who worked relentlessly for the welfare and uplift of the Bodo community as well as other downtrodden sections of society. He added that the ideology and philosophy of late Narzary would continue to inspire future generations, noting that Narzary always envisioned an integrated and harmonious society.
Recalling his legacy, Dipen Boro said Kanakeswar Narzary dedicated his entire life to the uplift and development of Bodo society and urged the younger generation to keep alive his ideals and values in contemporary society.
