Lakhimpur, October 29: After the recent Chintan Baithak (brainstorming meet), the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) appears to have intensified its activities across Assam. The regional party has launched a fresh push to strengthen its grassroots network, signalling its intent to regain lost ground ahead of the upcoming elections.
On Wednesday, AGP dealt a significant blow to its ally, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), when more than 600 BJP workers from the newly formed Ranganadi constituency switched sides and joined the AGP. The mass joining took place at the Ranganadi constituency headquarters in the presence of AGP’s Central Circle Secretary Jayanta Khaound and District Youth Parishad President Prashanta Burhagohain. The joining ceremony was led by former BJP district leaders, including Homen Das, ex-secretary of the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha, and former district vice-president Shailen Biswas. The event marks a major political shift in the area just days before Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s scheduled visit to Lakhimpur on October 30.
