NAGAON, July 3: Thirteen Anchalik units under the Nagaon district committee of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Thursday submitted separate memorandums to the District Commissioner through the respective Revenue Circle Officers, demanding an immediate halt to large-scale deforestation and illegal stone quarrying in the district.
In the memorandums, the organisation urged the administration to take prompt action against the ongoing environmental destruction caused by multiple stone quarries operating in the region.
It also called for an investigation into the cutting of 18 mature trees for the road-widening project from Senchowa to Bebejia and demanded that the findings be made public.
The AJYCP further demanded immediate steps against environmental degradation allegedly being caused by a stone crusher unit owned by one Gandhi at Udmari near Samaguri.
It criticised the forest department for its failure to protect the forests and warned that the organisation would be compelled to initiate a mass movement if timely action was not taken.
