Amit Shah unveils statue, inaugurates road named after Bodofa

KOKRAJHAR, MAY 2: Marking the 35th death anniversary of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a statue and inaugurated the newly named Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg road and rotary at Kailash Colony in New Delhi on Thursday.

The event took place in the august presence of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta, Union minister of State Pabitra Margherita, Assam cabinet minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief executive member Pramod Boro, and several other dignitaries.

The ceremony witnessed a well-attended gathering of people from across Assam, including the Bodoland Territorial Region, as well as the National Capital Region (NCR), New Delhi.

The Government of India and the Government of Delhi jointly named the street and unveiled the statue in honour of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma in the heart of the national capital. This marks a significant recognition of the Bodo community. Notably, this is the second roadway in New Delhi commemorating a distinguished personality from Assam, following the one dedicated to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi.

According to an official notification from the Office of the Superintending Engineer-I, South Zone, MCD, the road stretch from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near Kailash Colony Metro Station (A-18, Kailash Colony) to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near A-5/A-6, Kailash Colony, will now be known as Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Marg.

In his address, Shah said the statue and the road inaugurated in memory of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma commemorate a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the welfare and upliftment of the Bodos and other marginalised communities in Assam.

He stated that the Bodoland region has seen peace and development since the signing of the BTR Peace Accord on January 27, 2020. He noted that 78 percent of the clauses of the accord have already been implemented, and the remaining will be completed within the next two years. Shah emphasised that both the Centre and the state government are working together with dedication for the welfare of the region.

Assam chief minister lauded the initiative taken by the Government of India and the BTR administration to honourBodofa. He expressed gratitude to the Union home minister for his role in realising this tribute.

BTR CEM Pramod Boro said that the unveiling of the statue and road naming is a tribute to Bodofa’s enduring contributions to the upliftment of marginalised communities, promotion of democratic values, and advocacy for community rights.

“The event is seen as a landmark moment in honouringBodofa’s vision and contributions beyond regional boundaries, elevating his legacy to a national platform. The people of BTR have witnessed a historic day as Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma’s legacy has been immortalised in the nation’s capital,” Boro added.

He further stated, “Bodofa’s visionary leadership infused the Bodoland movement with purpose, clarity, and direction. His tenure in ABSU, particularly as President, transformed the student body into a platform for democratic assertion, marked by intellect, restraint, and an unwavering commitment to peace.”

The death anniversary event in New Delhi was jointly organised by the BTR Government and the All Bodo Students Union.

Meanwhile, in Kokrajhar, Bodofa’s 35th death anniversary was solemnly observed at Tulungapuri, Dotma. The central programme was organized by ABSU and the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Government of Assam.

The day began with the hoisting of the ABSU flag by Assistant Education secretary Romeo K Basumatary, followed by floral tributes to Bodofa.

Assam cabinet minister Nandita Gorlosa, BTC deputy chief Gobinda Basumatary, BTC executive members Rakesh Brahma and Dhananjay Basumatary, additional chief secretary Kalyan Chakravorty, and UN academy director Krishna Gopal Basumatary paid homage at the event.

Students, local intellectuals, and admirers of Bodofa’s legacy gathered to reflect on his contributions and offer their respects.
