GUWAHATI, Aug 18: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Friday demanded stringent punishment against persons involved in the cash-for-job scam leading to the suicide of BJP leader Indrani Tahbildar.

The APCC also submitted an FIR addressed to the commissioner of police at the Pan Bazaar police station on Friday, demanding action against those involved in the job scam and also those abetting the suicide of the BJP leader, who was the general secretary of the party’s Kisan Morcha.

Tahbildar had committed suicide on August 11 after intimate pictures of her with a party colleague reportedly went viral on social media platforms. Her autopsy report revealed her death had been caused by an overdose of sleeping pills.

The APCC said that as the nexus of cash-for-jobs in the Assam government is now in public domain, action should be taken against those involved in such deep-rooted corruption.

“This cash-for-job scam exposes the deep rooted corruption that runs deep within the Assam government. Since the people who are behind this nexus have admitted to their involvement in the job scam, the police should book a case of corruption against them at the earliest,” said Pranatee Phukan, former Congress minister and APCC vice president.

“Since the Union government and Assam chief minister claim to have zero tolerance with regard to corruption, we hope action will be initiated against those involved in the demanding cash in exchange of jobs within the BJP,” said Phukan.

“At present social media is being used as a tool compelling a person to take the extreme step of ending one’s life. This has been proved by the manner in which photos of BJP leader Indrani Tahbildar were leaked on social media that led to her committing suicide. It exposes the vulnerability of women in the state as cyber crime against women is on the rise,” said APCC vice president Bobbeeta Sharma.

“We demand severe punishment against those involved in leaking these photos and abetting Tahbildar’s death,” said Sharma.
