GUWAHATI, March 7: The Asomi Saras Mela 2022 which was being held since February 25 at Ganesh Mandir Indoor Stadium Field, Khanapara successfully came to an end on Monday with total sales of Rs 3.72 cr. Out of this, approximately Rs 2.73 cr sales were done by the Assam SHG stalls. The 10 days of Asomi Saras Mela had a total of 124 stalls covering all the districts of Assam, other states of India and a stall of Bangladeshi Zamdani Sarees. This year the Asomi Saras Mela was supported by SIDBI.
On the final day, minister of Panchayat and Rural Development Ranjeet Kumar Dass was present along with the secretary, P&RD, GoA, Munin Sarma. The highest selling stalls were awarded certificates and cash prizes by the minister. Earlier on March 5, principal secretary Dr JB Ekka also visited the Mela and addressed the gathering of ASRLM officials coming from across the state.Â
The cultural stage inauguration was done by Nipon Goswami, eminent Indian film actor and theatre artist in the presence of State Mission director Krishna Baruah, Minoti Borthakur, Rtd, HoD Cotton College and cancer survivor and counsellor, Sulakshana Baruah Bhuyan, owner and founder of Zanfai Traditional Jewellery and Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, wildlife activist.
Since Day 1, the mela witnessed a good footfall of customers in search of traditional, unique and handcrafted items. Â
Each day of the mela was packed with eventful activities like drawing competition, cooking, traditional games, free health check-up camps, and cultural programmes in the evening hours. This year the cultural evenings entertained the crowd in the presence of eminent personalities like Khagen Gogoi, Sangeeta Kokoti, M Brothers Band and Dipshikha Foundation. Performances of Rampur Dhuliya Kawarta Group, Pandit Bidyut Mishra and Group, Shree Bhumi Axom, Dilip Hira Group and Bhairav Sangeet Academy also enthralled the crowd.
The major attractions and highest sellers of this year’s Asomi Saras Mela are Eri and Muga items of various districts of Assam, wood, cane and bamboo crafts, water hyacinth crafts made by SHGs of Assam, traditional handloom items of various tribes of Assam, ethnic food stall, terracotta of Dhubri besides china clay pottery and wood craft interior decoration items, Manipur handloom and jewellery, readymade garments of Jharkhand, dry- fruits of Maharashtra, and Kashmiri woolens and carpets. The stall of Bangladeshi sarees, garments and books also gained prominence amongst customers.
