TEZPUR, Sept 6: Asam Sahitya Sabha honoured 39 noted teachers from the state on Friday at the ‘Guru Pranam’ ceremony organised at the Lakshmiram Baruah Sadan of Bhagawati Prasad Baruah Bhawan at Asam Sahitya Sabha Guwahati office on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.
Dr. Anil Saikia noted folklorist, researcher, and former Principal of Moran College described teachers as the guiding force of humanity. ‘The great teachers who make life acquainted with the world are revered figures of society. Many of those honoured today were founding teachers of their schools. For them, the monthly salary was a secondary matter. Their primary duty was to build human resources,’ he said. Dr. Saikia further added, ‘The honour conferred by the Asam Sahitya Sabha today will continue to remain one of the most prestigious recognitions at the state level.’
Vice-President of the Sabha Padum Rajkhowa from the chair of the President of the programme stressed the need for teachers’ support in the organisation’s journey ahead. ‘To bring the Asam Sahitya Sabha forward in an organised way, we need the cooperation of teachers. We all must resolve to involve teachers more closely with the Sabha,’ Rajkhowa added.
Principal Secretary of the Sabha Debojit Bora while delivering the introductory lecture highlighted the indispensable role of teachers in society. ‘Teachers are a vital part of society. If we want to build a healthy, strong, and disciplined community, the contribution of teachers must be recognised. Teachers alone can guide society, and that is why entrusting them with social responsibility has become crucial,’ he commented.
The programme began with rendition of ‘Chiro Senehi Mor Bhasa Janani’ by artistes of the Seuj Swarna Sakha Sahitya Sabha, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before the portrait of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan by Dr Hiralal Bora, President of the Reception Committee of the Sabha’s 12th Special Annual Pancharatna Session.
A Guru Vandana was also performed by Kushal Kumar of Seuj Swarna Sakha. Cultural highlights of the evening included a Borgeet by Nirmali Choudhury, folk songs by Jayanta Patgiri and devotional songs by Naina Deka.

The programme concluded with vote of thanks offered by Dr Sanjib Kumar Sarma, secretary of Asam Sahitya Sabha Guwahati office and rendition of the Jatiyo Sangeet of the state.
