Morigaon, Feb 7: In a significant crackdown on cyber-enabled financial crimes, Morigaon police detained approximately 16 individuals from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.
Following a complaint by Axis Bank, Morigaon Branch, a team of 11 members, led by the Superintendent of Police, conducted searches at 21 locations across Moirabari and Laharighat areas in the district.
The police confirmed the arrests and revealed that the criminals had allegedly siphoned over Rs 10 crore through Rupay credit cards using fraudulent PAN cards.
The cardholders were reportedly from outside Assam, with around 30% of the identified fraudsters already under custody. The police also highlighted the community’s support in the operation, which led to the exposure of illegal Aadhaar enrolment centres, leading to several arrests.
The police recovered 33 PAN cards, 29 bank passbooks, 66 ATM cards, 37 Aadhaar cards, 39 mobile phones, 107 SIM cards, and 23 Voter cards during the operation. Two cases related to these crimes have been registered at Moirabari Police Station 18/24 and Laharighat Police Station 26/24, according to police reports.
