Assam Cop Among Two Caught Taking Bribe

GUWAHATI, Sept 28: The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption, Assam on Wednesday caught two state government employees – one additional patwari Utpal Kumar Nath from Silchar and another Miachand Ali, naik (UB) of police, CID, Assam from Guwahati red handed for taking bribe.

Nath worked at the office of the settlement officer, Cachar and Hailakandi districts while naik (UB) Miachand Ali worked at the Assam Police headquarters, Ulubari, Guwahati.

According to the directorate, Nath had demanded a bribe amounting to Rs 2,000 from the complainant for the processing of land certification work.

Following the complaint, a trap was laid on Wednesday by a team of the directorate in the office premises of the settlement officer. “Nath was caught red handed in the office soon after he accepted Rs 2,000 as bribe from the complainant. A case has been registered in ACB Police Station on Wednesday itself vide ACB P.S. Case No. 43/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Nath,” the directorate said.

On the other hand, naik (UB) Miachand Ali had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant for expediting and passing of two pending bills of the complainant. However, Ali later reduced the bribe amount to Rs 2,000.

“A trap was laid on Wednesday by a team of the directorate in the office of the treasury officer, Kamrup Metro, Hengrabari, Guwahati. Ali was caught red handed around 2 PM, soon after he accepted a demanded bribe of Rs 2,000 from the complainant,” the directorate said.

Notably, a case has been registered in ACB Police Station on Wednesday vide ACB P.S. Case No. 44/2022 U/S 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Ali.

Necessary legal follow up action is underway, a directorate release stated.
