HT Digital,
Guwahati, Oct 3: Hours after the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) claimed responsibility for the execution of its top leader, Lachit Hazarika alias Brigadier Salim Asom, and another member named Bornali, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh, appealed to the outlawed group to surrender the bodies to their respective families.
Emphasising on the limited impact of press releases, Singh urged the banned outfit to allow the families to perform the final rites of their deceased members.
Taking to his X handle, the top cop wrote, “প্ৰেছ বিজ্ঞপ্তিৰ ভূমিকা সীমিত। অনুগ্ৰহ কৰি মৃতদেহবোৰ ঘূৰাই পঠাওক। পৰিয়ালক অন্তিম শ্ৰদ্ধা জনোৱাৰ সুযোগ হওক।” roughly translating to “Press releases have a limited role. Please send the bodies back. Please pay your last respects to the family.”
The outlawed ULFA (Independent) group confirmed on Tuesday that they executed top ULFA-I leader, Lachit Hazarika alias Brigadier Salim Asom and member Bornali. Salim Asom, close to ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah, joined the group in the 1990s, while Bornali joined in 2021.
Hazarika, also known as Brigadier Salim Asom, received capital punishment in Myanmar’s Sagain area in Hachi camp on September 20. Bornali, a boxer hailing from Tinsukia and a member of the banned group, also received a death sentence.
The insurgent group stated in an emailed media release that Lachit Hazarika and Bornali Asom alias Nayanmani Chetia violated the group’s constitution and policies by cooperating with Indian intelligence forces and coercing comrades to surrender with weapons.
