DHUBRI, June 16: In response to recent communal tensions in Dhubri, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh visited the district on Monday to assess the ground situation and ensure continued peace. The DGP held a series of meetings with delegations from various communities and stakeholders, and later assured the public that law and order remains firmly under control.
“I have met with all kinds of delegations, and the situation is under control. The delegations have also expressed confidence that peace is prevailing,” said DGP Singh during a media briefing.
Taking a stern stance, Singh warned against any attempt to disrupt harmony and stated unequivocally that lawlessness will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He also issued a strong warning against rumour-mongering and the spread of fake news, stressing that the police are actively monitoring such activities.
“Fake news harms the public only. There is no benefit to anyone from spreading such falsehoods,” he cautioned.
The DGP urged citizens to remain vigilant and to report any sensitive incidents directly to the Superintendent of Police or the Additional Superintendent of Police in Dhubri. “We will take immediate action. There is no scarcity of force,” he added.
Reaffirming the Assam Police’s commitment, Singh said, “We are working full-time, not only in Dhubri but across the entire state of Assam, to ensure peace and safety for all.”
Singh also provided updates on an ongoing investigation into cryptic wall writings, suspected to be linked to a militant outfit named ‘Nabin Bangla’. Authorities are actively probing the motives and individuals behind the incident.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr SP) of Dhubri, Leena Doley, addressed the media regarding Monday’s incident involving the alleged vandalism of an idol. She clarified that preliminary investigations suggest no malicious intent, as only part of a single idol was found damaged inside an idol maker’s shop, while other idols remained untouched.
DGP Singh noted that his visit was directed by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, and he will be stationed in Dhubri for the next two days to monitor the situation firsthand and guide security operations.
The presence of the state’s top police official is expected to bolster public confidence and reinforce the administration’s resolve to maintain communal harmony and public safety in the region.
