Guwahati, 07 Oct: Assam’s documentary and feature filmmaker Arup Barthakur, a National Film Award winner, died on Monday night at a private hospital in Guwahati after a prolonged illness.
Barthakur was recognised for his work in documentary filmmaking, earning the National Award for Best Non-Feature Film in 1990 for Notun Asha, produced by Beauty Sabhapandit. His films explored unseen dimensions of Assamese culture and society, blending storytelling with visual depth.

In recent years, his documentary Shadow of a Marble, portraying the life of sculptor Biren Singh, won multiple awards at national and international film festivals. In 2025, he received the 18th Rodali Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to theatre and culture.
Barthakur remained active in filmmaking until his final days. According to sources, he was working on a feature film based on a story, screenplay, and dialogue by Jimoni Choudhury. His death leaves a void in Assam’s film community, where his influence on documentary cinema and cultural storytelling remains significant.
