Assam: Flood Situation In West Karbi Anglong Worsens

DONGKAMUKAM, June 17: The flood situation in West Karbi Anglong has worsened with the Kopili River flooding its banks and release of water from the dams of the Karbi Langpi Project.

With the nonstop rain for the last five days, the water level has risen in the dams of Karbi Langpi Project. The Project has released its excess water at 4 pm on Thursday. The water has flown down its lower reaches and inundated its banks and low-laying areas. Baithalangso, Langjap, Namtaradubi, Tumpreng, Mugasong, Jaljuri, Hanlokrok, Rongkoroi, Bhellapara, Salana, Rupapathar, Satgaon, etc.

This is the second time that West Karbi Anglong has been flooded. People, pets and cattle are taking shelter in raised areas and embankments. Also, trees have fallen on the roads in Baithalangso blocking NPC road.

Micheal Marak, a 59-year-old Sarkari Gaonbura of Satgaon said, “I have never seen such water level in my life.”

Satgaon Market; Assam Gramin Vikash Bank (AGVB), Satgaon Branch and PWD IB at Satgaon on Dongkamukam Road are also submerged.

BJP worker and social workers, Ditollal Hasnu and Peter Marak distributed relief of 10 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 2 kg potato, and 1 kg salt, to 3109 families in Taradubi and Phantengphrang area. Church leaders gave biscuits and other eatable items to the affected families.
