GUWAHATI, Feb 19: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state government is working to build a strong industrial ecosystem so that young people do not have to leave Assam in search of jobs.

Speaking during the Budget Session 2026 of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Sarma said the government’s long term vision is centred on creating employment within the state through sustained investment and industrial expansion.

He said the administration is committed to ensuring that the youth of Assam can find meaningful opportunities at home instead of migrating to other states for work.

Referring to the Shraddhanjali scheme launched in October last year, the Chief Minister said the initiative was introduced to bring back the mortal remains of residents who die outside Assam. He informed the House that 30 bodies were brought back in October, 28 in November, 37 in December, 41 in January and four so far in February, taking the total to 122.

Sarma said the expenditure on the scheme was not the concern, but the larger issue of why so many young people were compelled to work outside the state. Many of them, he noted, were employed by major corporate groups such as Adani Group, Reliance Industries, Hinduja Group, The Oberoi Group and Tata Group outside Assam.

Highlighting the state’s investment drive, he said Advantage Assam 2.0 aims to attract investments worth Rs 20 lakh crore over the next two decades to generate large scale employment within the state.
