Guwahati, Nov 07: Ramcharan Bharali, a key figure in Assam’s Nagara Naam tradition, died at his residence in Nalbari late Thursday night.
Family members said Bharali had his evening meal and later complained of uneasiness before passing away. His death drew villagers, artists, and co-performers to his home early Friday to offer their respects.
Bharali spent his life performing Nagara Naam — a devotional folk form rooted in rhythm, song, and faith. He performed across Assam, from small village gatherings to cultural events, often leading the percussion with steady precision.
He was the first folk artist in Assam to receive a government pension for his contribution to traditional music. The Assam Natya Sanmilani honoured him with the title “Nagara Surya” for his work in preserving the form.
Fellow performers recalled him as a disciplined musician who rarely spoke about his achievements. He continued to play until his final days, travelling to events with the same instrument he had used for decades.
For many in the Nagara community, Bharali’s death marks the end of a chapter.
