Babul Ali, a police inspector of Nagaon and the recipient of PPMG passed away at a private nursing home in Guwahati on Wednesday morning following a prolonged illness.
Ali was one of the rarest police personnel of Assam Police among which he was selected for the coveted and most prestigious PPMG award in 1998 for his gallant action.
On December 7, 1997 while he was working as a driver of the then SP Nagaon, Pradeep Kumar (IPS), an ambush was laid by a group of outfits from ULFA at Polasoni area on the outskirts of the town under Nagaon PS. In the ambush SP Pradeep Kumar was injured grievously. During the ambush, Babul Ali displayed great valour and drove him safely to the nearest hospital and saved his life.
For this act of gallantry, he was awarded with PPMG in 1998 by the President of India.
On behalf of Assam Police, Nagaon police paid homage to the departed soul with salami as per procedure at Nagaon Police Reserve, a release added.
