JORHAT, Feb 25: In a landmark development for women’s education in the state, the newly constructed campus of Assam Women’s University at Kaliapani in the Mariani constituency was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
Established in 2013, the university is expected to mark a new chapter in women’s higher education in Assam.
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said that the overall development of society is not possible without advancing women’s education.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering women through education and self-reliance, expressing confidence that the Kaliapani campus would evolve into a major centre for knowledge, research and skill development.
During the programme, the chief minister also virtually inaugurated several other educational institutions, including the Government Law College at Kaliapani.
He stated that the development and modernisation of these institutions would significantly improve educational infrastructure and opportunities for students in the region.
The event was attended by Union minister of state for external affairs Pabitra Margherita, education minister Ranoj Pegu, cultural affairs minister Bimal Bora, Kaziranga Lok Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Jay Shivani.
Educationists and civil society members described the inauguration as a transformative step for women’s education in Assam.
They observed that the university would contribute not only to academic excellence but also to research, skill development and long-term empowerment of women.
Local residents noted that the establishment of the campus would provide fresh momentum to the educational landscape of Mariani and the wider Jorhat district.
Later in the day, the chief minister visited the historic Auniati Satra and offered prayers for the welfare of the people of Assam.
He assured that the state government would extend necessary support for the protection and preservation of satras, including Auniati Satra, and for the smooth progress of work related to Auniati University.
