Assistant Engineer Held On Graft Charge

GUWAHATI, May 10: Mridul Duari, an assistant engineer at the office of the executive engineer, Suklai Serfang Goreswar Division (Irrigation), Baksa was on Wednesday arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 30,000 as bribe in the name of issuing work order to the complainant who was awarded with a contract through tender process in the said Irrigation Division, a release stated here.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption for taking necessary legal action against the public servant.

Accordingly, on Wednesday, a trap was laid by a team of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption at the office of the executive engineer, Suklai Serfang Goreswar Division (Irrigation). The accused Mridul Duari was caught red handed around 3:20 pm, immediately after he accepted Rs 20,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the friend of the complainant who had approached the public servant with the bribe amount on behalf of the complainant. The tainted bribe money was then recovered from the possession of the accused public servant and it has been seized accordingly in presence of independent witnesses.

During a thorough search of the body of the apprehended public servant, an additional amount of Rs 10,000 was also recovered from his possession and has also been seized in presence of independent witnesses, the release further stated.

Finding sufficient evidence against the accused public servant, he has been arrested by the team of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam.

In this connection, a case was registered in ACB Police Station on Wednesday itself vide ACB P.S. Case No. 33/2023 under Section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Mridul Duari.

Necessary legal follow up action is underway, a directorate release stated here.
