HAMREN, June 27: In an effort to raise awareness about crimes against women and children, the Department of Women and Child Development, West Karbi Anglong, in collaboration with the CHL Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) and Mailoo Police officials, organised two awareness programmes at Lamsakhang under Kheroni on Saturday.
The programmes aimed to educate local residents and students on issues such as child marriage, human trafficking and cybercrime.
The first session was held for members of the local community and focused on the prevention of child marriage and the trafficking of women and girls.
Resource persons highlighted the legal provisions available to victims and discussed the long-term psychological and physical consequences of child marriage and human trafficking. They also stressed the importance of community vigilance in supporting institutional efforts to combat such crimes.
“Timely reporting and active community participation are our strongest shields in safeguarding women and children from these invisible networks,” an official said during the programme.
The second session was conducted at Adarsha Rashtra Bhasha Hindi School in Lamsakhang, where students and teachers were sensitised to cybercrime, along with the issues of child marriage and human trafficking.
Speakers explained various forms of cybercrime, including cyberbullying and online grooming, and shared preventive measures to help students stay safe online. They also informed participants about the legal provisions aimed at protecting minors in digital spaces.
During an interactive session, officials from the Mailoo Police Outpost encouraged students to remain vigilant, trust their instincts and promptly report any suspicious online or offline activities to the authorities.
The programmes witnessed the participation of village elders, students, teachers and other local stakeholders.
In their concluding remarks, the organisersemphasised that sustained awareness and collective community action are essential to ensuring the safety, security and well-being of women and children in the region.
